The Research Support and Process Improvement (RS & PI Branch) was established as a special unit in 2012 as part of the restructuring of the Department. The main objective of initiating this entity is to provide continued support for improving processes of the Department through the research-oriented approach. The branch provides support and guidance for any enthusiastic officer to conduct research studies in engineering, science, administration, social science, accountancy and other special fields related to process improvement of the Department and address present issues in the irrigation sector in general.
Studies on spillway discharge capacity enhancement technologies to improve the safety of dams under effects of climate change, understanding of ancient irrigation technologies in Sri Lanka for adapting them in the present-day context, modernisation of irrigation infrastructures and aspects of irrigation management are the research areas presently working on with the objective of improving the processes associated in performing the functions of the Department. The unit functions under the Director with the supervision of the Additional Director General of Irrigation (System Management).
Key Functions
- Identification of process improvement needs and research needs of the Department.
- Providing necessary support and guidance to Department officers to conduct research.
- Coordinating with universities and other research organisations for research opportunities.
- Conducting research in collaboration with universities, other research organisations, institutes and other relevant agencies when required.
- Identification of critical areas of performance lags, proposing strategies for process improvement, and assisting in implementing them in the Department.
- Dissemination of knowledge related to process improvement of the field of irrigation and water sector.
- Maintenance of staff database and progress tracking database of pension preparation of ID past ID employees.
Services
- Creating and facilitating the dissemination of knowledge for process improvement needs.
- Providing staff management information to relevant parties as required.
- Facilitating to track the progress of the pension preparation process of the Department to avoid delays.
- Make available opportunities for interested individuals of the Department to carry out research in collaboration with universities and other research institutions vice versa.
