Central Zone has been established to cover the Regional Planning and Design works covering the Kandy, Kurnegala, Puttalam & Ampara Irrigation Regions.

Objectives

The Director of Irrigation - Planning & Designs – Central zone is responsible for undertake execute Planning & Designs of above four Irrigation Regions which is not fallen to the category of Major Project Designs.

Functions

• Promoting new, restoration or rehabilitation water resources development project proposed at Regional level by Director of Irrigation (Region) or Divisional Irrigation Engineer.
• Preparation of PIR, initiating full investigation surveys, initiating Engineering material surveys and preparation of firm proposals, design and construction drawings of Irrigation schemes within the Central Zone.
• Studying the catchment and reservoir behaviour of the zone, install and develop the weather forecasting unit for the efficient system management for flood and drought disaster situation
• Execution and preparation of pre-feasibility studies for schemes of Central zone.
• Execution of operation studies and flood studies, framing firm proposals, designing and preparation of construction drawings for Irrigation schemesin Central Zone.
• Collecting water samples from irrigation schemes & other important locations and carried out water quality testing works by the water quality-testing laboratory attached to the zonal office.
• Publishing the water quality annual report based on the laboratory testing works.
• Ground water monitoring if the project under feasibility.
• Provide supporting service to the environmental studies branch and assist DI (District) to maintain Irrigation schemes in ecofriendly manner.
