Kumbukkan Oya

Proposed Kumbukkan Oya Reservoir and command area including other components of the project are totally located in Moneragala Administrative District of Uva Province.

The proposed project envisages a construction of a 48 million cubic meters (MCM) capacity reservoir across Kumbukkan Oya and provides irrigation facilities to 4,180ha of new and 1,250ha of existing lands downstream of the reservoir mainly in Buttala, Monergala and Siyambalanduwa DS areas, to improve the agricultural productivity. In addition, it is intended to provide safe drinking water to Monaragala, Nakkala, Kumbukkana, Okkampitiya and Buttala and also to generate hydro power as an additional benefit from this project.

Technical Details

Construction of 48 MCM reservoir with 350m long 52.5m height RCC dam.
Construction of spillway with 3 Nos of radial gates.
Construction of 4.8 km long tunnel.
Construction of LB powerhouse with capacity of 2 kW and annual energy 10.2 GWh.
Construction of RB powerhouse with capacity of 0.9 kW and annual energy 5.9 GWh
Construction off about 36km long LB canal and 9 km long RB canal.
Improvement/New construction to tanks and anicuts, which will be fed by RB and LB canals.
Providing infrastructure facilities for drinking water, electricity, roads in resettlement area.
Improvement to common facilities like Schools, Temples, Community halls for resettlers.

Beneficiary Area

Provide irrigation facilities to 4,180ha of new lands and 1,250ha of existing lands to increase the cropping intensity of existing irrigation schemes such as Kumbukkan Oya, Hulandawa, Ethimale, Wattarama and Kotiyagala in Buttala. Monaragala and Siyambalanduwa DS divisions.
Intended to provide safe domestic and industrial water to Monaragala District 12 MCM annually.
Contribute 16 GWh of hydroelectricity annually as renewable source.
