The training branch of the Irrigation Department has been established for identifying the training and capacity building needs of the department, to facilitate conducting examinations stipulated in Schemes of Recruitments (SoR) of all categories of employees and facilitate and coordinate training at head office, regions and Irrigation Training Institute (ITI), Galgamuwa.
ITI conducts pre-service and in-service training, efficiency bar examinations, technical examinations (Practical) and induction training programs coordinated by the Training Branch on behalf of the Director General of Irrigation. Both the Training Branch and ITI function under Directors with the supervision of the Additional Director General of Irrigation (System Management).

The Branch also facilitates directing officers of the Department for both local and overseas training: short term and postgraduate programmes including PG Diplomas, and Masters Mphil and PhD degrees. The local training component consists of induction training, short term, refresher courses and postgraduate diplomas. They are conducted by ITI and other institutions such as Universities, SLIDA, SLF etc.
In addition, the branch provides facilities for training of personnel from other Government organizations, universities and technical colleges on the request of respective organizations
Accordingly, the training branch carried out various functions to meet the requirements of department employees and outside personnel as a leading organization in the irrigation and water resources sector to meet the national goals.
