The area of Ampara Irrigation Region fully consists of Ampara Administrative District. Under the supervision of the Regional Irrigation Director, there are six Irrigation Engineer Divisions located to carry out the functions of the Irrigation Department. These divisions are namely Ampara, Sammanthurai, Kalmunai, Akkaraipaththu, Pottuvil & Mahaoya & each of these divisions are manned by a Divisional Irrigation Engineer and technical staff under his supervision. These Irrigation Engineers Divisions are further divided into several Irrigation Units to manage operation and maintenance activities efficiently and effectively to the farming community.

The total Irrigable Area of this Irrigation Region is 156,483.49 ac and it consists of 18 Nos of Irrigation Schemes. The largest Irrigation Scheme of this country, Gal Oya Irrigation System is situated in this Irrigation Region. It covers the irrigable area of 120,253 ac which is about 15% of the total area maintained by the Irrigation Department.
